Early in 2020 when Covid hit and the world shut down, so did the Church. Ministries that were forward thinking all over the world started scrambling to livestream their services, but later we realized it was not going to be enough. When I wrote a report on Covid Proofing your Ministry , I recalled a report that small ministries had a 75% decline in their income. This has/has a knock on effect on many things and people.

In this blog post I want to give you incredible value by sharing some income ideas for your ministry. They are all ways how you can increase your income through your ministry activities without losing focus on the ministry.

I’ve seen Zapper been used by some ministries with great effect and it has become apparent that ministries trust the platform. If there’s one thing that is important for us to do in this disconnected and socially distanced world, it’s that we have to make it easier for your congregation/audience to give.

Find below a video communicating how it helps  through a business lens.

Snapcan Donate

Because Ministry Media Mastery is a South Africa ministry and we started serving South African ministries first, I thought it prudent to share Snapscan as a resource to South African ministries to collect donations.

From their website:

‘In 2013, SnapScan launched one of the first mobile payment apps in South Africa. By combining our ingenuity with Standard Bank’s impressive financial infrastructure and expertise, SnapScan has been changing the way South Africans pay and get paid – one snap at a time.’

Let’s have a look at the donation functionality in their app.

Paypal Donate

I have been with Paypal for over a decade and set up an account with them immediately. The reason I did that was because I anticipated Paypal becoming a globally trusted and used payment platform, even more to what it is today.

If you’re considering using paypal as a payment gateway to grow your ministry income, you’ll have to ensure you have a FNB savings account for you to withdraw your donations into to access the money and make payments in offline stores etc.

Payfast Donate.

Many of the ministries I have worked with use Payfast as a payment gateway option for donations/offerings.

From Payfast:

We recognise the important work that you are doing running your charity or NPO. We will help you spread awareness about your cause and enable you to receive online donations instantly and securely via one of our 7 supported payment methods.

My personal experience with Payfast in trying to get it set up for ministries is that we had a little difficulty to get support when setting it up. I do know, however that Cornerstone Church is using Snapscan as a tool.

As a seqway, I want move into events, because it’s something I’ve mentioned in the first video above.

From Churchfuel:

Hosting events can be a great way to bring in new people from your community, disciple attendees, and to serve those in need. From marriage retreats to Christmas services, events provide an excellent opportunity to attract people to your church and bring them to Christ.

And having shared that (being in this online space we are today 26 February 2021), Hosting events  using the momentum of your audience could be an income stream for you. And because this advice is  poitioned as being for online events, ther benefits of  this are:

    • Where event hiring and management, speaker fees and travel was very expensive, your costs are now very low.
    • Because costs are low, you can charge a lower fee and get more people through the virtual door.
    • If you set it up properly, you can have a targeted audience you can communicate to and bring into your culture.
    • You can plan, execute and manage events faster.
    • Travel barriers being removed, you can mow reach a global audience.
    • There are increased networking opportunities.
    • Because you can bring more people on board, you are increasing the learning opportunities and in turn value to attendees.

Below, I want to share some platforms that have proven successful as an even ticketing platform that you can use. This is going to be a success if you  understand Collaboration as a pillar to be successful  asa ministry, especially using media, but collaboration is a many layered strategy that can also be applied to events anf hosting them. For reference for this, watch my webinar speaking about collaboration.

Let’s look at some event managing and ticketing platforms you can use:

Quicket is a great online ticketing platform serving the South African Community that has been been used and trusted by many South African organizations (including ministries) to  create successful events. From Quicket:

Whether you’re a first time event organiser or you’ve been in the game for years; whether you’re selling less than 10 tickets or more than 10,000 tickets, Quicket is designed to help you make great events happen.

Having been in the online space for almost 2 decades, I can say that Eventbrite has been around for a long time. I remember when they just came up as a platform hosting a lot of blogging and affiliate events.

Their corporate missions is to bring the world closer together through live experiences. They have resources to help you sell more tickets and also learn about what’s going on in the event industry.

Book Publishing

I have been self publishing books since 2007 and in 2012 won an award for ‘The Best Self Publishing Blog’. I had an incredible time with  the process of publishing all  4 of the books and can attest to it being easy(er), fun and much more profitable than traditional publishing. Find below an explanation of how it works.

I also want to also share a great opportunity to re-purpose and develop more business opportunity from a book once you have written one. The process to develop more business opportunities is as follows:

  • Develop a workbook
  • Launch a course
  • Develop a workshop
  • Host a retreat

Monetize your Youtube Channel

I’ll be very careful here and say I don’t have a ton of experience with this, but  if you are creating content on your Youtube channel, do it consistently and its doing well, then you have an opportunity to monetize your audience in various ways.

Let me quickly share some ideas for content that will help you build a following that will pay you for your value, even if it’s down the line:

  • Providing value from your knowledge and experience.
Showcase your worship team and their music (video embedded below)
  • Brand deals: Your ministry may influecne  culture very well and have a big audience. If it’s an ethical brand and it fits your culture and brand, then it could be possible.
  • Affiliate income: I know a few para-ministries doing this. They do videos that are helpful to their audience and share resources to solve problems and earn affiliate income from it.

So, all is not lost. It is possible for  your ministry to survive and THRIVE during the Pandemic. And I believe ‘making tents’ is a 100% Scriptural practice.

‘…and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them‘. ~ Acts 18:3

‘… nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.’ ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:18

I hope you found these resources valuable. If you did, please click the share button on the left side of your screen and tell your associates about it.

I would also appreciate any feedback in the comments. Please share what income streams help  you in your ministry/
